Step-by-Step

How to Slice a Model with the MakerBot Slicer

Click through the five steps. Each one shows what you will see in 3DPrinterOS.

Step 1 of 5

Upload Your Model

Add your STL file to the Files page in 3DPrinterOS. Your MakerBot needs to be connected first. If it is not, install your 3D printer.

Step 2 of 5

Click Slice and Choose the MakerBot Slicer

Click the Slice button next to the STL file and open the MakerBot Slicer. The slicers you see depend on your organization.

Step 3 of 5

Choose Simple or Advanced Mode

Two levels of control:

  • Simple Mode: 7 basic parameters for everyday prints
  • Advanced Mode: 17 parameters for greater control over the print
  • Default profiles: print without diving into parameters at all
Your admin can restrict Advanced settings or disable default profiles, so what you see depends on your organization’s rules.
Step 4 of 5

Slice or Slice & Toolpath Preview

Click Slice or Slice & Toolpath Preview. The sliced file appears in the corresponding project. With Slice & Toolpath Preview, the Toolpath Viewer opens automatically so you can inspect every layer.

Step 5 of 5

Send It to Your MakerBot

Find the sliced file on the Files page, click Print, choose your printer, then start the job right away or add it to the print queue.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

Common MakerBot Slicer Questions

What is the MakerBot Slicer in 3DPrinterOS?
The MakerBot Slicer is the 3DPrinterOS cloud slicer for MakerBot printers. It slices STL models in the cloud from any browser, with a 7-parameter Simple Mode, a 17-parameter Advanced Mode and dual extrusion support.
The slicer says “no printers available” after slicing
Check that the model sits fully on the print bed. A model positioned outside the bed fails to slice and shows “no printers available” even when your printers are connected. Use the Layout tool to move the model onto the bed, then slice again.
I get a generic “slicing error”
Failures before the actual slice starts show as a generic slicing error. A common cause is a model that already fills the whole build plate: supports and a brim push it past the build area, so it slices without supports but fails with them.
Why is infill 0.1 instead of 10%?
The MakerBot Slicer takes infill density as a decimal: 0.1 is 10%, 0.2 is 20% and so on. Fan Default Speed works the same way, where 0.5 means 50%.
I can’t see Advanced Mode
Your Organization Admin can restrict access to Advanced or Expert settings. If you cannot see the tab, it was most likely disabled to keep prints consistent across the organization.
How do I connect my MakerBot?
Network MakerBots connect through the 3DPrinterOS Client, see how to connect a network printer. For the MakerBot Sketch and Sketch Large, follow the Sketch connection guide.
