The X2D in Context

The X1 Carbon Successor, Built for Environments That Need Fleet Management

The X2D picks up where the X1 Carbon left off: enclosed, fast and reliable, with AI monitoring and AMS 2 Pro multi-material support. It adds dual-nozzle printing for clean support removal and multi-material work. For universities, makerspaces, enterprise labs and production, it is the natural next machine to deploy.

University Makerspace

X2Ds alongside Prusa, Ultimaker and remaining X1 Carbons

Most labs run mixed fleets. 3DPrinterOS manages them all from one dashboard with SSO, student billing and print approvals. No separate system per brand.

K-12 School District

X2Ds across many schools, one central dashboard

The compact footprint fits classrooms. Managing printers across 10 or 15 buildings needs remote access, central queues and usage reporting, all from any browser.

Enterprise & Production

X2D for prototyping, H2D Pro for engineering materials

Deploy X2Ds for everyday prototyping and H2D Pros for high-temp work. Role-based access controls who can use which machines.

The Catch

The X2D Is Easy to Deploy. Managing the Fleet Is the Hard Part.

The X2D works out of the box, but Bambu Lab’s software was built for individual users, not organizations running shared fleets. Bambu Studio handles slicing and Bambu Farm Manager covers basic local queuing. Neither offers SSO, user billing, compliance certifications, multi-vendor support or browser-based remote access.

As you scale to 10, 20 or more printers, multiple users sending jobs to multiple machines means queue collisions, anonymous prints, no material accountability and hours lost to fleet administration.

What 3DPrinterOS Adds to Your X2D Fleet

Enterprise Fleet Management That Scales With the Hardware

SSO and Institutional Auth

SAML, Shibboleth, OKTA or InCommon. Every print job tied to a verified user. No shared logins.

Browser Access, Any Device

Submit jobs, manage queues and monitor X2Ds from any browser. No Windows app, no LAN restriction.

Cloud Slicing

Users upload STL files and 3DPrinterOS slices for the X2D automatically. Upload, click, print.

User Billing and Quotas

Per-student limits, filament tracking by user and chargeback reports by department.

Audit Trail

Every job logged by user, file, printer, material, time and outcome. Exportable for HECVAT and TX-RAMP.

Multi-Vendor Fleet

X2Ds alongside Prusa MK4s, Ultimaker S5s and remaining X1 Carbons. One dashboard, one set of reports.

Transitioning From the X1 Carbon?

3DPrinterOS Manages Both During the Migration

Adding X2Ds to an X1 Carbon fleet requires no platform switch or reconfiguration. Both run on the same dashboard; your X1Cs keep printing while you onboard X2Ds, and users, queues, permissions and billing carry over.

Bambu Lab has committed to X1 series firmware support until May 2027 and security patches until May 2029. 3DPrinterOS will support your X1s for as long as they are in service. See all supported models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bambu Lab X2D Fleet Management FAQ

Does 3DPrinterOS support the Bambu Lab X2D?
Yes, from day one. The X2D is fully supported alongside every other Bambu Lab model (H2S, H2D, H2C, H2D Pro, P1S, P1P, P2S, A1, A1 Mini, X1 Carbon, X1E) and 200+ printers from brands including Prusa, Ultimaker, Stratasys, Creality and Formlabs.
Can I manage my X2D fleet alongside my existing X1 Carbons?
Yes. Both models run on the same 3DPrinterOS dashboard. Users, queues, permissions and billing work across both during the transition.
Is the X2D a good choice for university labs and makerspaces?
Yes. It is compact, enclosed and dual-nozzle, with the reliability and AI monitoring that made the X1 Carbon the university-lab standard. Paired with 3DPrinterOS for SSO, student billing and print queues, it fits shared environments with hundreds of users.
What is the difference between the X2D and the H2D for fleet deployment?
The X2D is compact with a 256mm build volume, designed for desktops, labs and makerspaces. The H2D has a 350mm build volume, true IDEX dual extrusion and optional laser/cutting modules for production and engineering. Choose X2D for compact, high-count deployments and H2D for larger parts or advanced materials.
How does the X2D compare to the H2D Pro for secure environments?
The H2D Pro includes WPA2-Enterprise WiFi and Ethernet; the X2D uses standard WPA2 WiFi. For ITAR, CMMC or classified environments, the H2D Pro is the better fit. For university and general enterprise use, the X2D is well suited when paired with 3DPrinterOS on-prem or Azure deployment. See our security page.
How do I connect an X2D to 3DPrinterOS?
The same way as any Bambu Lab printer: enable Developer Mode (and LAN Mode Liveview for the camera), install the Cloud Client on a host device, and add the printer with its IP, Access Code and serial number. It takes under 30 minutes for your first printer. See the step-by-step guide.
